SSC basics
Start with what SSC is, what it conducts and where official information appears.
What is the full form of SSC?
SSC stands for Staff Selection Commission. It is a Government of India recruitment commission that conducts competitive examinations for Group B and Group C posts in central ministries, departments and organisations.
Is the SSC exam a Class 10 board examination?
No. In this website, SSC means the Staff Selection Commission, not the Secondary School Certificate board exam used by some states. The Commission recruits candidates for central-government jobs through CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD, JE, CPO and other examinations.
Which are the main SSC exams?
The main open examinations are CGL, CHSL, MTS/Havaldar, Constable GD, CPO Sub-Inspector, Junior Engineer, Stenographer Grade C & D, Combined Hindi Translators and Selection Posts. See the complete SSC exam guide.
What is the official SSC website?
The official website is ssc.gov.in. Use it for OTR, applications, notices, corrigenda, exam information, answer keys, results and official PDFs.
Is SSCExam.in an official government website?
No. SSCExam.in is an independent information portal. It organises official information for candidates but is not affiliated with the Staff Selection Commission or Government of India.
How often are SSC exams held?
Most major open examinations are planned annually, but dates can move and every stage follows its own notice. Use the SSC 2026–27 calendar for planning and the individual notice for confirmation.
Which SSC exam can I take?
Match your qualification first, then check age, post conditions and preferred career.
Which SSC exams can I apply for after Class 10?
Common Class 10-level routes include MTS/Havaldar, Constable GD and matriculation-level Selection Posts. Each has different age, physical and post requirements.
Which SSC exams can I apply for after Class 12?
CHSL and Stenographer are the main 10+2-level exams. You may also be eligible for MTS, GD and relevant Selection Posts if you meet their age and other conditions.
Which SSC exams can I apply for after graduation?
CGL and CPO are major graduate-level routes. Graduates can also apply for qualification-matched Selection Posts and may apply to lower-qualification exams when all conditions are met.
Which SSC exam is for engineers?
SSC Junior Engineer recruits in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical disciplines. The required degree/diploma, experience and department conditions are post-specific.
Which SSC exam is for Hindi translators?
The Combined Hindi Translators Examination recruits for Junior/Senior Hindi Translator and related official-language posts. It requires the prescribed postgraduate language combination and, for some posts, additional diploma or experience.
Which SSC exam is best?
There is no single best exam. CGL offers a wide range of graduate posts; CHSL offers clerical and data-entry routes after Class 12; JE suits technical candidates; CPO and GD suit uniformed careers; Stenographer suits candidates with shorthand skills. Compare all exams in the exam directory.
Can I prepare for CGL and CHSL together?
Yes. Tier-I preparation overlaps in Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, English and General Awareness. You must separately prepare for each current pattern, difficulty level, Tier-II modules and typing/skill requirements.
Eligibility, age and attempts
Eligibility is decided on the crucial date stated in the notification—not on the exam or joining date.
What is the age limit for SSC exams?
It varies by exam and post. Common unrelaxed bands include CGL 18–27/30/32 by post, CHSL 18–27, MTS 18–25 or 18–27, GD 18–23, CPO 20–25, Stenographer Grade D 18–27 and Grade C 18–30. Always use the current notice’s exact cut-off date.
What age relaxation is available?
Common central-government relaxations include 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST and 10/13/15 years for PwBD/ PwBD-OBC/ PwBD-SC-ST, with separate rules for eligible ex-servicemen, departmental candidates and other notified groups. The exact table and certificate conditions in the current notice control eligibility.
How many attempts are allowed in SSC exams?
Most SSC open examinations do not state a separate numerical attempt limit. You may generally attempt while you satisfy the age, qualification and other conditions. Every submitted application counts only for that examination cycle, not as a permanent attempt quota.
Can final-year graduation students apply for CGL?
Only if they will possess the required qualification by the crucial qualification date in the current CGL notice. A pending final result after that date can make the candidate ineligible even if the application form was accepted.
Does graduation percentage matter for CGL?
Most CGL posts require a recognised bachelor’s degree without a general minimum percentage. Some statistical and specialised posts have subject/marks conditions. Check the post-wise essential qualification table.
Can candidates from any state apply?
Major SSC examinations are national recruitments, but nationality/citizenship rules, regional Selection Posts, domicile-related relaxations and force preferences can differ. Verify the notice and exact post code.
When is age and qualification checked?
SSC uses the crucial date printed in the notice. Your date of birth and qualification must satisfy the conditions on that date; later birthdays, results or joining dates do not replace it.
OTR and application form
A clean application starts with matching records and ends with saved proof of submission.
What is SSC One-Time Registration (OTR)?
OTR creates the candidate’s profile on the SSC portal using personal, identity and contact information. Complete the current OTR at ssc.gov.in; an old registration from a previous SSC portal may not replace the current process.
Is Aadhaar compulsory for SSC OTR?
Follow the current portal and notice. SSC provides an Aadhaar-authentication option; candidates not using Aadhaar authentication may be required to upload specified proof of name and date of birth and complete additional verification steps.
What documents are needed for an SSC application?
Keep Class 10 proof of name/date of birth, educational certificates, active email/mobile, accepted photo/signature inputs, identity proof, category/ESM/PwBD certificates where claimed, and post-specific documents. Upload only what the portal currently requests.
What is the SSC application fee?
Many open SSC examinations use a ₹100 fee, with exemptions commonly notified for women, SC, ST, eligible PwBD and eligible ex-servicemen candidates. This is not universal—pay only the amount shown in the current notice and portal.
Can I correct an SSC application after submission?
Only when the notice provides a correction window, and correction charges/rules may apply. Not every field can necessarily be changed. Submit accurate information initially and use only the official correction facility.
How should I upload my photo and signature?
Use the live-capture or upload process, background, dimensions and file rules displayed for that examination. Do not reuse old third-party instructions when the portal flow has changed.
How do I know my SSC form is complete?
Check that the final status shows submitted/complete and any fee shows successful. Download the submitted application and payment receipt, record the registration/application number, and keep screenshots of status.
Can I change my exam centre later?
Usually centre preferences cannot be changed after the permitted application/correction period. SSC can allocate a different centre for administrative reasons. Read the notice before choosing preferences.
Exam pattern and syllabus
Common subjects overlap, but tiers, negative marking and qualifying tests are exam-specific.
What subjects are asked in SSC exams?
The recurring subjects are Quantitative Aptitude/Mathematical Abilities, General Intelligence & Reasoning, English Language and General Awareness. Some exams add computer knowledge, statistics, finance/economics, engineering, translation, typing, stenography or physical tests.
Is there negative marking in SSC exams?
Most objective SSC papers use negative marking, but the deduction can differ by exam, tier, paper or session. Never assume one fixed penalty; read the scheme of examination in the current notice.
What is the difference between Tier I and Tier II?
Tier I is commonly an initial computer-based stage. Tier II is a later, more detailed stage and may include multiple sections, modules, post-specific papers or qualifying components. Final merit rules differ by exam.
Does CHSL have a typing test?
Yes. Tier II includes qualifying skill/typing components as applicable to the post. Required speed, language and error rules are stated in the current CHSL notice.
Does CGL have a data-entry test?
CGL Tier II Paper I includes a qualifying Data Entry Speed Test module under the notified scheme. Computer-knowledge and post-specific papers/modules can also apply.
What physical tests are in SSC GD and CPO?
Both include notified PET/PST stages after the written exam. Race, height, chest where applicable, weight/medical standards and exemptions vary by sex, category and region. Use the official tables, not a generic summary.
What is the SSC Stenographer skill test?
Qualified candidates take dictation and transcribe it on a computer. Dictation speed and transcription time vary by Grade C/D and Hindi/English medium, so practise the exact notified standard.
Where can I find the complete syllabus?
Start with the SSC syllabus and preparation guide, then confirm every subject, tier, marks, duration and penalty in the current official notification.
What is normalization in SSC exams?
When a computer-based exam is held in multiple shifts, SSC may apply its notified normalization procedure to account for variation in difficulty. Merit and cut-offs use the marks/score under the published rules.
Admit card, city slip and exam day
Check candidate login and official notices repeatedly as the exam approaches.
When will the SSC admit card be released?
SSC publishes examination-city/admission information according to the current notice and schedule, often close to the exam. Dates are not identical for every examination or candidate; use your official candidate login.
What is an exam city slip?
It informs you of the allotted examination city/date or related admission information. It may not be the final admission certificate. Follow the instructions and download the final document when made available.
What should I carry to the SSC exam centre?
Carry the printed admission document and original accepted photo identity/document(s) stated in its instructions. Name and date-of-birth proof may be required in specific situations. Read every line on the admission certificate.
What items are prohibited?
Electronic devices, communication equipment, unauthorised paper/material and other listed items are prohibited. Reporting time, dress/accessory rules and biometric/frisking procedures appear in the admission instructions.
What happens if my details are wrong on the admit card?
Compare it immediately with your application and contact SSC through the channel in the relevant notice/portal. Do not wait until exam day, and keep copies of your application and identity records.
Answer key, result and cut-off
Understand each release—response sheet, tentative key, final key, result, marks and allocation are different.
How do I check the SSC answer key?
Open the official notice/link during the announced window, sign in as instructed, and save the response sheet and tentative answer key. Download promptly because access may close.
Can I challenge an SSC answer key?
When SSC opens an objection window, submit the challenged question/answer through the official system with the prescribed fee and credible evidence. Late or informal objections are not accepted.
What is the SSC cut-off?
The cut-off is the minimum score/standard used to shortlist or select candidates under the notified category, post, paper and stage. It changes with vacancies, difficulty, candidate performance and selection rules.
Is merely clearing the cut-off enough?
Not always. You may still need later tiers, qualifying modules, PET/PST, skill tests, medical examination, document verification, post preference and final merit. A stage cut-off is not a joining guarantee.
How do I check SSC results and marks?
Use the Results/notices area and candidate login at ssc.gov.in. Result PDFs commonly list roll numbers/names of shortlisted candidates; individual marks may be released separately for a limited period.
How is final merit prepared?
It depends on the examination: notified scored papers, normalized marks, qualifying modules, category, vacancies, post preferences and post-specific standards are applied. Read the “scheme,” “mode of selection” and “resolution of ties” sections.
Posts, salary and selection
Salary is pay-level based; actual in-hand pay depends on posting and deductions.
What is the salary after an SSC exam?
SSC recruits to several pay levels. Basic pay is combined with applicable allowances such as DA, HRA and transport allowance, then statutory deductions apply. The exact pay level appears post-wise in the notice; “in-hand salary” varies by city, department and personal deductions.
Which posts come through SSC CGL?
CGL covers assistants/section officers, inspectors, auditors, accountants, tax assistants, statistical and other Group B/Group C posts across participating ministries and organisations. Vacancies and included posts change each cycle.
Which posts come through SSC CHSL?
CHSL commonly recruits Lower Division Clerk/Junior Secretariat Assistant and Data Entry Operator posts, subject to the current vacancy list and post qualifications.
What jobs come through MTS and GD?
MTS recruits Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff and the notice may include Havaldar in CBIC/CBN. GD recruits constables in participating CAPFs/SSF and Rifleman (GD) in Assam Rifles under the notified allocation.
Can SSC jobs be transferred?
Posting, transfer liability and service conditions depend on the department, cadre, post and vacancy. Many central-government posts can involve all-India service liability; verify the post description before submitting preferences.
What happens after the final result?
Nominated candidates complete document verification and any required medical/background/departmental formalities. The user department issues appointment-related communication; SSC selection alone does not waive eligibility checks.
How important are post preferences?
Very important. Preferences can affect allocation based on merit, category, eligibility and vacancies, and may be final once submitted in the prescribed window. Check duties, pay level, location/service liability and physical standards first.
Preparation and study plan
Use fewer resources, more previous papers and deliberate mock analysis.
How should a beginner start SSC preparation?
Choose one target exam, print its syllabus/pattern, take one diagnostic previous paper, then build subject fundamentals. Solve topic-wise PYQs while learning and start timed sections early. Use the 90-day SSC plan.
Are previous-year papers important?
Yes. They reveal recurring concepts, question style and realistic difficulty. Solve them timed, record mistakes by topic and repeat weak sets instead of only reading solutions.
How many books should I use?
Usually one clear concept source and one reliable PYQ/practice source per subject are enough. Changing books repeatedly creates unfinished coverage. The official syllabus and real past papers should control what you study.
When should I start mock tests?
Begin with sectional and previous-paper tests after basic coverage, then increase full mocks as the exam approaches. Analysis matters more than test count: classify errors as concept, calculation, reading, guessing or time-management errors.
How should I prepare General Awareness?
Combine exam-relevant static topics with a limited, revisable current-affairs source. Use SSC PYQs to identify depth, make short revision notes and practise mixed questions; avoid collecting endless monthly PDFs.
How should I prepare for typing, stenography or physical tests?
Start alongside written preparation. Use timed typing/transcription with error tracking, or a progressive fitness schedule for running and prescribed events. Qualifying tests can still eliminate a high written scorer.
Can I crack an SSC exam without coaching?
Yes, if you can follow the official syllabus, learn concepts, practise enough PYQs, take and analyse timed mocks, and revise consistently. Coaching can provide structure but does not replace practice and correction.
Where should I check current SSC dates?
Use the SSC 2026–27 calendar summary for a quick view and the official tentative calendar PDF plus current exam notice for confirmation.
